Magnitude 7.7 – SEA OF OKHOTSK – August 14, 2012

This seismogram looks very different from other earthquakes of this size (and the quake was not very damaging, considering that it’s almost a magnitude 8) because the earthquake was very deep – 625 km (388 mi).

The deepest known earthquakes occur at about 700 km below the surface of the Earth. These earthquakes do not produce tsunamis, and even if they are very large, the ground shaking felt at the surface is not very strong.
