The BC-ESP recorded the strong earthquake that struck the Gulf of California, Mexico on August 3, 2009. In addition to the magnitude 6.9 main shock, you can also see a magnitude 5.8 foreshock and a magnitude 6.2 aftershock on this seismogram. Notice that, as we would expect from the magnitude scale, the main shock is about 10 times bigger than the foreshock.
